Pentaquark – a particle consisting of five quarks.
Collaboration LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty experiment), working at the Large hadron Collider (the LHC) at CERN confirmed the discovery pentaquark particle consisting of five quarks. Two academic papers published in the journal Physical Review Letters.
In the first study, the authors showed that the observed in experiments in 2015 reaction when I first opened the pentaquark, is impossible without the existence of new particles. In the second paper, the researchers examined an alternative channel (path) of the reaction, which also leads to the birth pentaquark.
In 2015 was fixed collapse of lambda baryon particle composed of three quarks, the J/ψ-meson, proton and charged kaon. The pentaquark appeared in an intermediate state during the reaction. He later broke into the J/ψ-meson consisting of two quarks, and the proton consisting of three quarks.
The statistical significance of the opening is nine standard deviations. In particle physics the discovery is made if this value is at least five standard deviations.
LHCb — the smallest of the four main detectors at the LHC. It is designed to study the asymmetry of matter and antimatter in the interactions of b-quarks. Installation of LHCb is a single arm spectrometer, able to record the tracks of particles in the range of angles from 15 to 300 milliradians.
At CERN on the border of France and Switzerland is the TANK — the largest in the world accelerator installation. In 2012, the organization reported the discovery of a particle with the properties of the Higgs boson. After experiments, the Collider was stopped on 14 Feb 2013 and after modernization was launched in 2015.
