Recent data indicating the possible discovery of a previously unknown subatomic particle, I can talk about the existence of a fifth fundamental interaction of nature, according to a paper published in Physical Review Letters, theoretical physicists from the University of California, Irvine.

“If this is true, then there is a coup,” says Jonathan Feng, Professor of physics and astronomy. — For decades, we know of four fundamental interactions: gravity, electromagnetism, strong and weak nuclear forces. If further experiments confirm the opening of the fifth interaction will change our understanding of the Universe and may pave the way for the unification of interactions and dark matter”.

In mid-2015 researchers of the University of California came across the work of experimental nuclear physicists of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, who were looking for “dark photons”, particles that could indicate invisible dark matter, which accounts for 85% of the mass of the Universe. The work of the Hungarians showed abnormal radioactive decay, which pointed to the existence of a light particle only 30 times heavier than the electron.

“The experimenters are unable to state about the discovery of new forces,” Feng said. — They just saw an excess of events that point to a new particle, but then it is unclear what it is: a particle of matter or particle-vector of force.”

Group in Irvine examined data the Hungarian researchers, as well as all other previous experiments in this area and shown that the explanation does not match any particle of matter or dark photons. However, they proposed a new theory that synthesizes all the existing data and determined that the finding could point to a fifth fundamental interaction. Their initial analysis was published in late April on the arXiv server, and after on the same website appeared to confirm the analysis.

The work of scientists at the University of California shows that instead of having to be a dark photon, this particle can be “fotofone X-boson”. If the normal electric force acting on electrons and protons, nonagency boson interacts only with the electrons and neutrons in a very narrow range. Co-author of the analysis Timothy Tate, Professor of physics and astronomy, says: “none of the bosons that we have seen do not have these characteristics. Sometimes we call it the X-boson, where X indicates unknown.”

Further experiments will be crucial. “This particle is not very heavy, and the labs have enough energy to create 50-60 years,” he says. But the reason that it, is its weak interactions. Since the new particle so light, around the world in small laboratories working quite a lot of experimental groups, who will be able to fulfill the initial requirements necessary for its search.

Like many scientific breakthroughs, this opens up completely new scientists to the field of research.

Feng attracted by the possibility that the fifth interaction can join electromagnetic, strong and weak nuclear as “manifestations of the one Grand, fundamental forces”.

Referring to how physicists understand the Standard model, Feng suggests that there can be some dark segment with its substance and strength. “It is possible that these two segments interact with each other and interact by some fundamental forces. And the power of the dark segment can manifest in the form of fotoporno power, which we see as a result of the Hungarian experiment. In a broader sense, it is consistent with our initial finding the nature of dark matter”.
