From the ISS managed to photograph a picture where you can see the Northern lights flash and glow of the Earth, coming from the upper layers of the atmosphere.
The frame was made in 2012, but NASA has edited it a few, noting it different parts. The picture was taken of MSK over Canada.
It shows the illumination of the Earth’s atmosphere, which day is much more intense, however this phenomenon to explore at this time is impossible due to sunlight. Scientists have not been able to study this phenomenon, but I assume that it arises as the Northern lights, as a result of collision of charged particles with the atmosphere.
Besides the natural phenomena on the photo are visible traces of human activity. The map shows the names of settlements, where you can see artificial lighting.
