Astronomers have discovered that the already known galaxies hiding hundreds of uncharted.
Scientists from the University of Sussex said that the vast majority of known galaxies are hiding behind at least two other similar source of cosmic dust.
The findings of scientists were published on the University website. In the study, researchers analyzed 360 of galaxies observed in the infrared with a telescope “Herschel”.
In that case, if the glow had the shape of a perfect circle or at its center was not the galaxy, the object was classified as a complex of galaxies. At the end of the observations the share of such complexes was 95%.
As stated by lead author Jillian Scudder, “the formation of such a large number of stars in antiquity it is difficult to explain. We found that each galaxy is actually two or three galaxies, before their strength was underestimated multiples”.
At present the observation of super-far galaxies in the infrared range produces images with very low quality. Each made a telescope “Herschel” frame blurs the goal area, which is 26 times greater than the entire milky Way.
According to scientists, the use of more high-quality images will allow to consider many objects that were considered to be one galaxy.
