Scientists listened to the sounds made by sperm whales and found that these whales are able to pass on certain information to individual members of its pack.

Previously it was thought that each group of sperm whales is a whole and has a certain set of sounds, which is used for communication with other groups. The researchers attached a listening device to the body of the seven sperm whales that live in the area of the Azores and analyzed they produce clicking sounds codes. Scientists discovered that the messages that whales have addressed other canines, consist of a series of different signals. All biologists recorded 21 combination.

Some combinations are used more often than other sperm whales. One of the messages, consisting of five similar sounds were heard by scientists 288 times from four animals. Two whales also produced a series of three identical signals 183 times. All biologists have recorded 802 messages published five whales, the sperm whale the other two were silent.

According to the researchers, the signals may carry information about whether the sperm whale rises to the surface or sinks to depth. It may also be the call of the mother to her cubs to come around, or the message that the female is ready to mate.

Like elephants, sperm whales live in groups headed by a female. When young males reach maturity, they leave the flock and migrate to the waters around Iceland or the Northern coast of Norway. After they grow to sufficient size, they returned to the South to find a female. Echolocation sperm whales can find themselves prey at a distance of one kilometer
