American physicists-experimenters have created the world’s first quantum crystal, the existence of which demonstrates the violation of temporal symmetry. Preprint published on the website arXiv.org.
Scientists have developed the object is a group of ions of ytterbium located relative to each other to form a ring. Chilled to extremely low temperatures, the system is switched into a state with minimum possible energy. According to theoretical studies, the violation of temporal symmetry on the example of such an object manifests itself in the form of rotation around its axis.
Such a concerted motion of ions of ytterbium and was observed by scientists. Physicists say that the created crystals can find application in devices using quantum memory, in particular, quantum computers.
The concept of a time crystal, first proposed in 2012 by the Nobel laureate in physics Frank Wilchelm, presupposes the existence of an object, symmetry-breaking time.
This is manifested in the fact that he is not in a stationary (unchanging) state, and is periodic in time behavior. That is why the site is called the crystal of time, by analogy with the periodic spatial structure of ordinary crystals. Such objects, despite its periodic change (movement), cannot generate energy, as this would violate the eponymous law of conservation.
