The researchers captured the moment of transition of corona into the solar wind.
NASA experts, the first to depict the edge of the Sun, and described the transition, which begins the formation of the solar wind.
The results published in The Astrophysical Journal.
“We managed to get a full picture of the evolution of the solar wind. Perhaps this will expand our understanding about the development of the space environment. For the first time about the solar wind, we learned in the 1950-ies, but was not able to fully study this phenomenon,” – said the study’s lead author.
The solar wind is a continuous stream of ionized particles that consist of helium-hydrogen plasma formed by the corona of the Sun. The farther from the sun, the faster it falls the magnetic field strength, and the disintegration beams reminiscent of the shot of air gun.
The researchers were able to trace transformation to the stage where the flow of water turns into a mist. To identify any changes the scientists were able with the help of the STEREO camera. Thanks to the installation managed to open the presence of the transition zone on the outskirts of the corona of the Sun.
