The whole Eastern United States is on a stable tectonic platform.
The mantle under the South-Eastern regions of the United States literally “peels off” from the located above the layers of the earth’s crust, which may be the cause of earthquakes in the territory of Washington and other cities on the East coast, where there are no prerequisites for the emergence of aftershocks.

Birol and his colleagues tried to reveal this geological mystery, enlightened the bowels of the planet in the East of America with the help of radar and making a three-dimensional map of the three main layers of rocks: earth’s crust, usually is the source of all the earthquakes, mantle and asthenosphere – semi-liquid thin layer between the crust and mantle, which “float” all of the tectonic plates.
