Lived in Belgium 40 thousand years ago, Neanderthals ate each other, bones made tools.

On the bones recovered from the cave Goya (near NAMUR), traces of cuts, nicks and grooves, clearly indicating the use of the remains of food. Apparently, Neanderthals used to butcher their own kind, sliced meat and extracted bone marrow.

“By far the Neanderthals practiced cannibalism. Carcasses of horses and deer, discovered in the same cave, were processed in the same way,” said study leader Herve Bohren (Hervé Bocherens).

In addition, femur and three tibia used to shape stone tools. In other cases, it used the bones of animals.

Scientists still find it difficult to explain, whether Neanderthals practiced a ritual or gastronomy (scarcity of food) cannibalism.

In 2010, Spain was discovered the remains of a Neanderthal family of 12 people, who were eaten by other members of this species. Scientists working in the cave in the Spanish province of Asturias, where they managed to find the bones of six Neanderthals adults, three teenagers, two younger children and one baby. All the bones found there are traces of the use of guns, in which the cannibals, in particular, the extracted bone marrow.

Even earlier, in 2009, had found evidence that Homo sapiens killed and ate the Neanderthals.
