Galactic halo is a spherical cloud surrounding a spiral galaxy. The structure is formed by stars, interstellar dust, and dark matter. Because the last observation of the halo is difficult, however, it is possible to track its gravitational influence on other objects in the Galaxy.
The researchers used survey data of SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey), including about 15 thousand located in the halo of the milky Way stars. Astronomers carried out the modeling showed that between galactic radii in length five and ten kiloparsec halo has an elongated shape.
Model, which assumes a spherical or flattened shape, unlikely. Models describing strongly flattened shape of the halo, are excluded. Scientists estimate that the ratio of the axes of the halo is equal to 1,5-2.
