If you will move in one direction long enough, you’ll just be back where we started.
A few years ago we answered the question: if the universe is expanding, then where? And then found out that the universe is in our understanding not really expanding into something or into something. If you will move in one direction long enough, you’ll just be back where we started. Since the universe is expanding, it’s a long journey, but still not infinite.
But now we are ready to put an asterisk by this answer and to clarify: if we do not live in a plural universe.
One of the most interesting ideas in our world is that our universe may be one Universe in a vast multiverse. Each universe is like a bubble, enclosed in the void space of multiple universe expanding from its Big Bang.
And in each of these universes the laws of physics will be completely different. In the Universe there are a bunch of physical constants, like gravity or strength of the atoms. In the case of each constant is the laws of physics happened by chance, like dice thrown, and formed the basis of our Universe — places that almost, but not quite hostile to life.
So, imagine that all these different bubble universes emerge in a huge space foam multiple universe and the laws of physics are different. Maybe in another universe the force of gravity repels, or there are unicorns.
The vast majority of these universes may not be formed any life, but throw the dice an infinite number of times — and you will eventually get livable conditions.
Any form of life, able to perceive the Universe, had to turn to the universe, able to live. Sounds strange, Yes, but it’s really a scientific point of view. If these bubble universes are close enough, maybe they somehow will RUB against each other, and it will be possible to detect them from the other universe.
In other words, we could look into space and see the cosmic bruise and to understand what is our universe collides with another.
Well. And what astronomers, they looked into space in search of a sign that our universe interacts with other universes? Actually looked and found something really strange.
By studying the emission of the cosmic microwave background, the afterglow of the Big Bang, astronomers have discovered temperature fluctuations. These different temperature, or anisotropy to correspond to regions with different density of matter in the early Universe and stretched out on a huge scale as we expand.
While most of these temperature differences is due to the modern cosmological theories of the Universe, there is one region that opposes these theories. It’s so strange that scientists named it the “axis of evil”.
However, there are lots of possible explanations about what the axis of evil may be. And each of them is quite reasonable. Except one.
Especially interesting idea is that we can see the area where our universe has crashed into other universe, mutually violating the laws of physics.
If this is the case, and astronomers have witnessed the interaction of universes, what does it mean for the poor aliens who are threatened by the pairing of the universes? We don’t know, but imagine what could happen if the laws of physics are two different universes crossed. What can be the total of seven and have green? At twenty-six and dream of the unicorn? It is unlikely that the result is like living peacefully separate civilizations of the universe.
But don’t worry, this region billions of light years away, and it’s unlikely another universe knocking on our door, we just need better surveillance.
