The lake is located at a depth of 15 kilometers.
Scientists from the University of Bristol have discovered a lake under the volcano Uturuncu in the Andes of Bolivia.
The discovery was made by researchers during the study of the “anomaly” at a depth of 15 kilometers under the volcano. The anomaly, called the Altiplano-puna, slows down seismic waves and conduct electricity, unlike the magma that surrounds it.
In the study, researchers took samples of rocks that were ejected during the eruption 500 thousand years ago, and placed them in the water. Then the scientists simulated conditions that mimic those that surround the anomaly, that is, the pressure in the 30 thousands times above atmospheric and a temperature above 1500 degrees Celsius.
In the experiment, the scientists found that when certain amounts of water conductivity corresponds exactly to that which corresponds to the anomalies. According to the researchers, under the volcano contains a volume of water that corresponds to the largest lakes on Earth.
