Transnistria is preparing to integrate into the Russian Federation

Приднестровье готовится интегрироваться в РФTransnistria is going to “join” Russia.

The so-called Transnistrian authorities have taken another step towards joining Russia, UKRINFORM reports with reference to the Bureau of reintegration in the government of Moldova.

According to the report, the “President” of Transnistria Yevgeny Shevchuk signed an unconstitutional document “On the implementation of the outcome of the Republican referendum, held on 17 September 2006”, according to which 97.1% of the region’s residents voted for joining the Russian Federation.

The Moldovan authorities have already called the appropriate “decree” null and void because it was signed by the unconstitutional authorities on the basis of illegal referendum, said the Moldovan side.

“We regret and deep disappointment that the document undermines the efforts of the constitutional authorities of Moldova and its international partners involved in the Transnistrian conflict settlement in the framework of negotiations in the 5+2 format” (Moldova, Transnistria, Ukraine, OSCE, Russia, EU and USA)”, – reads the statement of the Moldovan authorities.

The conflict around Transnistria began in 1989 and worsened after Moldova’s independence in 1991. In the first half of 1992 between Moldovan forces and Transdniestrian forces were active hostilities.

September 17, 2006, Transnistria held a so-called “referendum”, when the vast majority of a half-million site supported integration with Russia.
