Too much sleep is harmful for the mental faculties

Слишком долгий сон вреден для умственных способностейAccording to a new study conducted by American scientists, too long sleep can reduce the mental faculties of man.

As shown by the results of the analysis, people who sleep on average 9 hours or more, have lower rates of cognitive functions of the brain compared to those who sleep 6-8 hours a day. The results of the conducted work published in the journal Psychiatric Research.

Joint group of researchers from the University hospital in Madrid and Columbia University in new York examined data on more than 2,700 people aged 60-70 years who were under observation for three years. The control group included 49% of participants in the experiment, sleeping 6-8 hours a day, 40% of subjects had the habit of sleeping for 9 hours or more, and 11% of people sleeping only 5 hours a day or less.

At the beginning and at the end of the experiment, the patients took a test to determine the state of cognitive functions of the brain, the so-called mini-test of the study mental state (MMSE), which is used for the evaluation of dementia. In the end, it was found that the decline in such cognitive abilities as memory and thinking, going twice as fast among fans long sleep compared with those who slept 6-8 hours.
