Some previous studies found that coffee consumption reduces the risk of colorectal cancer, but other work has not confirmed this assumption. Also, studies linking coffee consumption with lower risk of certain types of skin cancer and breast cancer, prostate. The new study is one of the largest works in terms of the number of people with colorectal cancers.

The researchers examined coffee consumption among nearly 8,500 people, including approximately 5,000 patients with diagnosis of colorectal cancer and 3,500 people not suffering from cancer. On average, people in the study drank less than two cups of coffee per day. The results showed that the risk of colorectal cancer was 30 percent lower among those who drank coffee compared with those who almost did not use this drink. Compared with the risk for people who drank less than 1 Cup of coffee a day, the chance of developing colorectal cancer was 22 percent lower for those who drank one or two cups of coffee per day; 44 percent who drank more than two cups, and 59 percent lower for those who drank more than two and a half cups a day of this aromatic drink.

The results were confirmed even after the researchers took into account factors that may affect the risk of developing colorectal cancer: age, gender, the amount of fiber and aspirin. (Some studies have shown that aspirin can reduce the risk of colon cancer.) But the more coffee people drank, the less they run the risk of Contracting colorectal cancer, the researchers say “Although it is still too early to recommend drinking coffee as a way to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, but I think this study deserves attention. Necessary future research to study the effect of coffee consumption on the risk of colorectal cancer,” says Dr. Stephanie Steel, an employee of the Cancer center at the University of southern California.

It has been hypothesized that coffee reduces the risk of colorectal cancer by speeding the passage of stool through the colon – this means that the tissue of this organ have less time to be exposed to potential carcinogenic agents. It is also possible that coffee affects the composition of the microflora of the gut, or that compounds in coffee have anti-cancer properties.
