Scientists have questioned the popular theory of the origin of life

Ученые усомнились в популярной теории происхождения жизниAccording to scientists, man can never know exactly how life formed.

A group of biologists from the SCRIPPS Institute has put forward a new hypothesis for the origin of life, according to which the molecules of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acids (RNA) evolved at the same time. Scientists have thus questioned a popular theory about the RNA world. Their findings, they reported in the journal Angewandte Chemie, a press release published on the website of the Institute.

The theory of the RNA world suggests that the number of chemical reactions led to the formation of self-replicating molecules of ribonucleic acids. Over time they began to function as a storage of genetic information and encodes the amino acid sequence of proteins. At some point this role was assumed by DNA.

Scientists have suggested that the last stage would have to be a mixture of elements of DNA and RNA, that would lead to the emergence of hybrid chains. The results of the study showed that such hybrids are highly unstable. They could not form genes and also copied with high accuracy. In this regard, the chimeric molecules would not survive competition with the more stable ribonucleic acids. The reason for this instability was the differences in the structure of the sugars (ribose in RNA and in DNA desoxyribose).

In modern organisms if ribonucleotide mistakenly embedded in the DNA, special enzymes to correct the violation. This indicates that evolution has led to the emergence of the system with the most stable molecules. Otherwise the existence of genes would not have been possible.

Researchers believe that RNA and DNA were to arise and develop in tandem. This DNA could have formed earlier, and RNA could have evolved in order to synthesize it. However, this process is possible only if RNA will already “know” what is deoxyribonucleic acid.

According to scientists, man can never know exactly how life formed, but may obtain understanding of the basics of biological processes.
