Found the city of Heraklion – “Egyptian Atlantis”.
The discovery of the ancient city of Heraklion, disappeared after the earthquake in 1200 years, incredibly surprised scientists.
The mysterious history of the city is very similar to Atlantis.
Heraklion was located at the mouth of the Nile and was a small prosperous town, and its inhabitants were a people intelligent and educated. But literally in an instant Heraklion simply disappeared.
It happened in the 1st century BC, when a strong earthquake destroyed homes, sank ships and killed almost the entire population. The survivors had to flee, leaving all their possessions.
Many centuries the ruins of this city lay 3 kilometers from the coast of Alexandria in Aboukir Bay, hidden under a thick sludge.
However, the French archaeologist Franck, Gogo managed to find the ancient city. He realized that it was lost Heraklion thanks to a black granite slab on which is carved his name. There were also the remains of shipwrecks and a variety of items, including coins, jewels and personal belongings of the former residents.
This city is considered semi-mythical, and modern scholars know about him a little. But the historians of antiquity often mentioned is Heraklion in its records. So Diodorus wrote that when Hercules blocked the river, saving the lives of people, they erected a temple in his honor and named the city in his name. In the records of Herodotus says that Helen of Troy, trying to hide from her husband, wanted to escape with her lover Paris in Heraklion.
During an archaeological expedition one of the first discovered the great temple with the remnants of thick stone walls. Next were three huge statues, made of pink granite. Two of them depict hitherto unknown Pharaoh and his wife, and the third is dedicated to the Egyptian God hapy.
Inside the temple, scientists have found a monumental tomb, inscribed with hieroglyphs. Their translation was enabled to say with certainty that this is indeed a great temple of Heraklion.
Amazed archaeologists and another discovery — a two-meter granite stele, which is a nearly identical copy of the stele found in 1899 in Nocatee. In Egyptology duplication of stelae found for the first time. Carved on them the text says about the decree of Pharaoh Nectanebo I, introducing 10 percent tax on the products of Greek artisans.
The only difference in the text of both stelae is its ending. For one, the decree ends with the words: “Let it be carved on the stele erected in Narratee, on the banks of the canal of Anu”. Another said: “Let it be carved on the stele, installed at the entrance to the Greek sea in Heraklion-Tonis”.
Examining the place where there was a Harbor with dozens of ships, scientists assumed they were all washed away by the tidal wave, which took place after the earthquake.
Despite the fact that the city had been under water for many centuries, most discovered by divers of the subjects were kept in good condition. They were all created in the period from 1 century BC and earlier.
Among the finds — a variety of gold rings, bracelets, earrings, hairpins and combs, as well as the beautiful Greek Cup, incense Cup, a huge number of coins and other ancient objects that belonged to the residents of Heraklion.
