The staff of the School of biological Sciences at the University of Queensland and Kvinslendskih Institute proved that some species of fish, like people, can be deceived by optical illusions.

These include members of the family synorogenic (lat. Balistidae), inhabiting the waters of the Great Barrier reef. Study leader Karen Cheney believes that the illusion is one of the most interesting and entertaining areas to explore, after all, create a situation when the human brain is unable to perceive the true properties of the object. In her words, the optical illusion one sees, presumably because of processes on the retina or nerve endings that are located closer to the brain.

In order to check whether you are affected by fish complex illusions in the same way as humans, scientists have created a “cubic illusory test” in which an orange square appears different from the brown square on the side of Cuba, although in reality they are identical in color, size and brightness. Scientists explain this by the fact that people perceive the “brown” color in the shadows, so the brain encodes its darker orange. To teach fish to select a specific square, the researchers used behavioural experiments reward in the form of food.

Four fish were trained to peck an orange color, four brown. After that, it turned out that they, too, perceive brown over orange, when you came to brown on the light side, and is accustomed to the brown square brown bit on the dark side. Professor Cheney believes that, apparently, some species of fish are deceptively perceive things similarly to humans.
