Scientists have created the first catalogue of more than a billion stars in the milky way.
Astronomers have created the first catalogue of stars in the milky Way, according to the European space Agency (ESA). It includes more than one billion objects of our galaxy.
Detailed map of which is available on the ESA website, was compiled with the help of space Observatory Gaia, which recorded the exact position in the sky and the brightness 1142 million stars.
Gaia (Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics) was launched on 19 December 2013. Data that astronomers used to create the catalogue, were collected by the staff during the first 14 months of space exploration.
Through its scientific programme, Gaia has measured the coordinates and velocities of a billion stars in the milky Way. The main scientific goal of the telescope is to clarify the mechanisms of the origin and development of our Galaxy.
