Nuts stabilize blood pressure and cholesterol

Diet is important in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The combination of Mediterranean diet of vegetables, fruits and different daily consumption of nuts reduces by 13.7% the risk of metabolic syndrome.

The increase in the number of cardiovascular diseases are accompanied by increase in the number of overweight people and rising incidence of diabetes. All these diseases are somehow connected with metabolic syndrome X (metabolic cardiovascular syndrome is dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, adiposity (top), arterial hypertension. Metabolic syndrome X occurs in 25-35 % of the population and over the age of 60 years is over 40%.

The study involved 1,200 people with metabolic syndrome. Patients were divided into three groups: the first received tips for eating low-fat food, the second went to a lecture on the Mediterranean diet. This diet is designed for a large number of vegetables and fruits, grains and reducing dairy products and red meat. Each member of the second group also received a liter of olive oil. The third group also landed on the Mediterranean diet, participants were given 300 grams of mixed nuts daily.

A survey of participants was taken a year later showed that 2% of patients from the first group got rid of the metabolic syndrome; the second was 6.7%, and the third with 13.7% of patients. The latter decreased the level of cholesterol and stabilized blood pressure.
