A team of scientists from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and of the Higher normal school of Paris (France) conducted a chemical analysis of clay pots and its age is about 6300 years old, found in Northern Greece, and found traces of the most ancient wine in the world.

Chemical markers of red wine was present on two parts of the broken jug and one whole vessel. Pottery was discovered in 2010 in the ruins of buildings, destroyed by fire more than six centuries ago. The find was made in the area of Dikili Tash, where previously were found the products of the Neolithic period.

The fossil remains of crushed grapes found near the jars, prove that local farmers were able to do grape juice and wine. Previous studies relied on the presence in pitchers of the chemical characteristics of the grapes, and in the present work, scientists have studied the dishes for the presence of markers of fermentation — pyruvic and succinic acid. The results of the study will help better understand the history of wine and the geography of its consumption by ancient civilizations.
