In recent times, scientists have observed a rare sight in Afghanistan in the 70-ies of the last century. Even then, their population numbered only 120 individuals, living in a small area in the North-East of Afghanistan. Given the instability that prevailed in the region in the past years, scientists feared that the Bukhara deer here died out completely.
However, during the expedition of the 2013th year, the researchers were able to detect traces of the animal, which eventually brought them to the young female Bukhara deer.
“It was a great feeling,” says Zalmai Moheb from the University of Massachusetts, who took part in the expedition. – We for the first time in 45 years it has received evidence that the species still exists here.”
While scientists are not ready to answer the question, how many members of the species now living on the territory of Afghanistan. However, they believe that measures should be taken to preserve these animals.
Bukhara deer – a very rare species, which in addition to Afghanistan lives in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries. In the past century, the population of these animals has decreased significantly and there was only 350-400 individuals. However, in recent years their number has increased to about 1900.
