Half a century solved the problem of hydrodynamics

Решена полувековая задача гидродинамикиThe theoretical results scientists have demonstrated in experiments.

Mathematics and physics from Italy, USA, Germany, Finland and Japan have solved the hydrodynamic problem half a century ago. The theoretical results scientists have demonstrated in experiments, the video of which is available on YouTube. A study published in the journal Physical Review Letters, and briefly about it reports the state University of new York at Buffalo.

Mathematicians have proposed a simple method of obtaining approximate solutions of the Korteweg — de Vries in the form of solitons — solitary waves, the interaction of which with each other do not change their shape and speed.

In the experiment, the physicists were able to observe these waves. For this they used a pool of 110 meters in length. Scientists have tracked the spread on eight shallow water solitary waves and predicted by the theory of their very slow decay.

The Korteweg — de Vries occurs in the theory of nonlinear waves. In 1965 Norman Zabusky and Martin Kruskal showed that one of his decisions is a set of eight solitary waves. Scientists proposed a new method of obtaining approximate solutions of the equation allows, according to them, the easier and more accurate to predict the behavior of the solitons than the previous approach.
