Free access to a new map of the brain

В свободном доступе появилась новая карта головного мозгаCreated a new map of the human brain, with the highest to date resolution.

The Institute’s specialists of Allen (Allen Institute for Brain Science) have created and published a new Atlas of the human brain, which has the highest to date resolution. This digital Atlas, Allen Brain Atlas, a freely available, allows researchers to study the functioning of specific parts of the brain and brain functioning in General.

“In order to understand the structure and functioning of the human brain, we should be maximally detailed description of its structure,” says ed Lein (Lein Ed), PhD from the Institute of Allen – “Scientists have long made atlases of the brain of various primitive life forms. However, because of the size and incredible complexity of the human brain, the creation of his Atlas was and is a very difficult task to solve, which we only now begin to approach.”

The new Atlas was created through a combination of methods of Narochanka with cellular resolution, histological analysis and structural mapping. In the case of Atlas, in addition to group from the Institute of Allen, was attended by scientists from other organizations. Invaluable assistance in this case was provided by Bruce Fishl (Bruce Fischl), a scientist from the Massachusetts main hospital (Massachusetts General Hospital), which produced a magnetic resonance scan of the brain as a whole, before it was divided into thin slices that made it possible to produce color areas of the hotel for further histological shooting.

Higher resolution, which is 1 micrometer at a point was obtained using a specialized scanner, developed and manufactured by specialists of the Institute of Allen.

Heterogeneous data collected by scientists were transferred to digital form and combined with resolution to the cellular level. The new map shows all of the parts of the brain, all of its functional areas and the relationships between them.

“Atlas Allen Human Brain Reference is the only such Atlas for today, which brings together all credible scientific studies, the previously known theoretical and data collected specifically for this experimental data,” says doctor of medicine Patrick Hof (Patrick Hof, M. D.), one of the participants of this project, “And was developed for the Atlas software Brain Explorer 2 makes it no more difficult than reading a book. It allows you to present data in various forms, provides comfortable control and various additional functions”.
