Planetary scientists from the US and the UK came to the conclusion that the temperature of the atmosphere above the Great red spot (BKP) of Jupiter at several hundred degrees Celsius higher than surrounding sections of the gas shell.
This education, according to scientists, is a “portal” through which thermal energy leaves the depths of the gas giant. A study published in the journal Nature, and briefly about it reports the edition EurekAlert!
According to scientists, the BCP is a source of acoustic waves that carry energy from the depths of the gas giant’s upper atmosphere (at a height of 800 kilometers above the spot). In BKP fluctuations arise, as suggested by planetary scientists, as a result of redistribution of energy in the deep layers of atmosphere of Jupiter.
Although the mechanism of heating of the upper atmosphere of the BCP is not completely clear, in it take part, according to planetary scientists, the Coriolis force, which restricts the spread of heat in the Equatorial part of the gas giant.
A similar mechanism is responsible for the heating of the atmosphere over the Andes in South America and is not characteristic only for the Earth and Jupiter, but also Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The energy transfer by acoustic waves from the depths of the heavenly bodies, according to scientists, allows to solve the issue of anomalous warming of Equatorial areas of the atmosphere of gas giants, why solar energy is not enough.
Scientists noticed that although the theory about the role of CDB in heating of the atmosphere of Jupiter existed earlier, the first time they were able to conduct direct observation of proving it. The main part of the studies of astronomers took place at the infrared telescope IRTF (Infrared Telescope Facility), located atop Mauna Kea (Hawaii, USA).
CDB has a size of about 40 thousand kilometers in length and 13 kilometers in width. It’s more of any of the linear dimensions of Earth. Spot is the large atmospheric vortex in the Solar system, and its supervision by academics within the last 300 years.
