Researchers from Warwick University have demonstrated that eating large amounts of fruits and vegetables contributes to a higher level of happiness. Thus, it can be compared with the increase in well-being from finding work.

In the study, we studied the feeding behavior of 12 thousand randomly selected people, who were diet diaries and their psychological state. Participants in long-term studies of The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey (HILDA) indicated which products they used every day and in what quantities.

Data were collected on nutrition in 2007, 2009 and 2013. They were matched against the responses on psychological state. Taking into account changes in income and personal circumstances, which could also affect the level of happiness.

It turned out that each additional daily serving of fruit and vegetables has a positive effect on the level of happiness. According to scientists, this effect is much stronger than the beneficial effect on health. A possible explanation for this is the carotenoids contained in fruits and vegetables that can affect the redox balance in the human body. He, in turn, can affect hormone levels.

Researchers believe that people tend not to change their diet as a healthy lifestyle does not bring immediate results. However, psychological well-being can be improved quickly enough for it to motivate people to review their diet.

The obtained results can be used by specialists in the field of health to convince people to switch to healthy eating, the article notes.
