The MeerKat radio telescope “caught” 1300 galaxies in a single shot

The MeerKat radio telescope showed his first photo. As reported on the website of the project, the telescope was able to remove 1,300 galaxies.

The area that hit the lens of the telescope, covered only 0.01% of the entire celestial sphere. Previously, scientists knew of about 70 galaxies, which are located in this region.

At the moment the construction of the telescope is not yet completed: only work 16 out of 64 receive antennas. It is expected that all antennas will be commissioned in late 2017.

In the future, MeerKat will be part of a radio interferometer SKA, which will have the total area of the antenna of about one square kilometer. They will be posted at a distance of more than 3 thousand kilometers. Thanks to the SKA project scientists will be able to obtain information about the Universe a few million years after the Big Bang, and to study the effects hypothetically caused by the effect of dark energy and dark matter.
