Thaumasia were formed by volcanic activity.
The American researchers suggested that Mars is located on the plateau of Thaumasia can be inhabited (Thaumasia Planum). This is stated in an article published in the scientific Journal Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets.
To such conclusions scientists have come in the course of studying geography, Mineralogy and chemistry of this region of the red planet. Most of the data relied on by researchers, was obtained through the running of the 2001 Mars Odyssey Orbiter.
During the survey, the experts came to the conclusion that Tasmania were formed by volcanic activity. This region reminded researchers of the shield volcanoes of Hawaii. Also in the plateau was found to have a large concentration of sulfur and potassium.
According to scientists, the presence of these two elements may indicate the presence in this region of the water in one of its States of aggregation. And this, in turn, can be a sign of habitability of the plateau of Thaumasia. These findings should be tested in an experiment that is complicated by the mountainous terrain of the area.
Currently orbiting Mars are five stations. Three of them were American: Mars Odyssey (since 2001), MRO (2006) and MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN, with, 2014).
