The doctors explained why TV can be good for small children

TV helps children learn new words.

University of Wisconsin-Madison have found out that children can facilitate the process of memorizing new words. It turned out that extraneous noise (e.g., sounds, radio, TV) enhances the absorption of words. This was proved by the experiment with 106 children.

First, the children read sentences with two unfamiliar words. Next, the children were required to associate sound with a visual image and subsequently studied say two words. The first tests were 40 children. And they all knew how to remember new words, if the room was quiet.

However, the second group of children whose age were somewhat larger, showed a higher level of memorization of words. And the second group, again, was in a room with background noise. Then, we conducted a second experiment with young children (age 2.5 years). They, too, were put in a room with a radio or a TV. And they showed a good performance of learning words. Apparently, the background sounds help to focus attention on the formation of new vocabulary.
