Paleontologists were able to assemble one of the most complete skeletons of this prehistoric mammal
Paleontologists-Amateurs found in Michigan in the United States the remains of a mastodon. Of them managed to assemble one of the most complete skeletons of this prehistoric mammal – writes “Popular Mechanics”.
The mastodons frozen in the ice around the Great Lakes about 13 000 years ago. It is assumed that their final extinction was facilitated by the people who hunted them for their meat, hides and bones.
The remains of mastodons in Michigan are not uncommon: the local soil contains very little oxygen, so the bones are well preserved. However, some parts of the skeleton, as a rule, is not enough. Bones found this year, enough for reconstruction of 70% of the skeleton of a huge animal.
