Sony has developed a display on the LEDs

Sony разработала дисплей на светодиодахSony has unveiled a unique new display which works with the help of new technology.

The company Sony announced that its engineers have developed a new type of information display on a conventional led — Crystal LED Integrated Structure or abbreviated CLEDIS. It is on a conventional semiconductor LEDs, not the LEDs made of organic materials, as is customary in recent years. This, at least, promises to protect the new units from the “disease” fading, which is still characteristic of the OLED.

Unusual was the fact that the company used LEDs super small size with an area of 0.003 square millimeter. Three of these LEDs contains classic RGB-triad (red, green, blue), and educated thus the pixels far enough apart from each other. This is the second important point of development — 99 % of the screen is a solid deep black surface. The black background of a special light absorbing material ensures the highest level of the typical contrast ratio of one million to one. This allows image contrast to remain day and night at different ambient light levels.

The third feature of the Sony displays CLEDIS was the fact that the LEDs are printed on black background by surface mounting. This leads to a maximum light output of LEDs and unprecedented viewing angles of 180 degrees from any side of the screen. The maximum brightness of the screen while up to 1000 nits (1000 CD/m2). We will add, the stated color gamut approaching 140 % of sRGB. Stated about 10-bit support and color coding of the extended dynamic range HDR.

The fourth feature displays Sony CLEDIS is the modular design of the display and control unit. Dimensions control unit is 440 × 349 × 65 mm. Consistently you can connect up to 20 such blocks. Each unit works from 72 of the display modules. One display module is a plane with RGB-triads in the configuration of 320 × 320 pieces. The resolution of the composite display under control of each module is up to 3840 × 2160 pixels. In other words, CLEDIS technology opens way to edge-to-edge display with almost arbitrary size. We will add, each control module bears two DisplayPort port and 4 port DVI-D.

Scalable displays Sony CLEDIS are intended for decoration of exhibitions, museums, parks, stadiums, and so on. They will also find use in corporate meeting rooms and in television studios. The first public demonstration of the development in the form of a display with a resolution of 8K × 2K will be held from 8 to 10 June at InfoComm 2016 in Las Vegas. Commercial delivery trends the company expects to begin in early 2017.
