According to the researchers, photons can provide a link between neurons.
Scientists from the University of calgary and University of Alberta said that the human brain can exist in the photon tunnels, which are essentially new to science form of communication between neurons.
The research results were published on the bioRxiv website. As stress researchers have long established that nerve cells can emit photons. Now, however, the authors decided to check whether the photons to provide an additional connection between neurons.
In the study, researchers created a mathematical model that showed that the myelin sheath covering the axons of neurons can act as waveguides. Myelin has a higher refractive index than the extracellular environment and the contents of the neurons, which endows it with the necessary conductive properties.
The authors of the study propose to conduct a series of experiments that could confirm their hypothesis.
