Georgian scientists have reported the unique discovery of the ancient settlement in the vicinity of Digniori in the valley of Shiraki in Eastern Georgia.

Georgian archaeologists have reported the unique discovery of the ancient settlement in the vicinity of Digniori in the valley Shiraki (Dedoplistskaro district of Kakheti region in Eastern Georgia), which can move on a century ago, the time of state formation in Eastern Georgia.

According to the Ministry of culture and monument protection of Georgia, archaeologists have unearthed the burial, presumably, commander.

Scientists believe that a warrior killed in battle from the enemy’s arrows, the tip of which was found near the remains. Behind the warrior discovered a bronze sword, which experts attribute to the XIII century BC.

Archaeologists say that the findings, among which pottery, stone weapons of war, and fragments of bronze items, accurately confirm that the settlement belongs to the late second – early first Millennium BC.

Among the finds of the archaeological expedition also hundred-meter tunnel, which, according to experts, was used to supply settlement.

During the excavation of the Western part of the fence was discovered two ritual buildings, with the so-called “sacrificial table” that the scholars refer to the ancient civilization of the Hittites (Indo-European people of the bronze age, who lived in Asia Minor].

By assumption, the members of the expedition, the settlement probably was the capital of the ancient state that is not mentioned in historical sources, as evidenced by the still extant ruins of the interior fortress of the settlement, surrounded by a two-mile stretch of stone fence and belted a moat, the extent of the Palace, infrastructure, settlements, and burial grounds on site.

“Archaeological work in the settlement, Gigauri will continue. Studies of the full range can radically change the conclusions about our past and for many centuries to move the date of state formation in Eastern Georgia”, – stated in the message of the Ministry.

Major settlement in the vicinity of Digniori was discovered in late 2014 with the help of images taken from space. According to satellite imagery, it was the largest ancient settlement in the South Caucasus. Based on the data of seismic monitoring Center of Georgia, it was concluded that the mound was destroyed in the IX century BC in a strong earthquake.

The results of the excavation produced in 2015, led the archaeologists to suggest that the ancient settlement was built in the XII-IX centuries BC.
