Prevention of cataracts: antioxidants protect your vision

Eating large amounts of foods rich in vitamin E such as spinach, broccoli and seeds that can protect eye health, reducing the risk of developing cataracts by a quarter, according to Chinese scientists from the Medical College of Qingdao University.

Expert analysis of studies involving almost a quarter of a million people showed that high levels of vitamin E in the blood can protect against the development of dangerous diseases of the eye. It was found that regular consumption of vitamin E reduces risk of age-related cataracts by 27%.

The recommended daily intake of vitamin E is 12 mg, but most people do not consume sufficient amounts of spinach, broccoli, nuts, seeds, shellfish, vegetable oils and avocados.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that is present in the lens of the eye. Oxidative stress in the lens of the eye, caused by factors such as sunlight and environmental pollution can lower antioxidant protection and increase the risk of cataract development.

Wear sunglasses and use vitamin E in sufficient quantity is the best to protect your eyes from cataracts, experts say.

In reviewing 27 studies involving 245350 people from different countries the researchers looked at intake of vitamin E and its influence on the development of age-related cataracts.

Experts found that high levels of vitamin E can reduce the likelihood of developing cataracts by a quarter. Thus, optimal intake of antioxidant nutrients such as vitamins C and E that can support the eyes and blood vessels healthy, researchers summarize.
