The flying Observatory has detected in the Martian atmosphere the oxygen.
NASA employees told reporters that the spectrometer of the Stratospheric Observatory for infrared astronomy (SOFIA) found out that in the atmosphere of Mars contains atomic oxygen.
The particles were discovered in the mesosphere of the red planet for the first time after 40 years that passed since the previous studies.
Scientists believe that oxygen could have a significant impact on how Mars looks today. However the content in the atmosphere was not as high as expected.
In the near future SOFIA will continue the study of a space object, to more thoroughly explore its history
