In the waters of the archipelago fournoi (Greece) archaeologists have found the wreckage of more than 40 ships, the oldest of which sank about 2500 years ago
According to the Director of the Foundation RPM Nautical Foundation, which is organizing the expedition, Peter Campbell, this discovery demonstrates the importance of the archipelago”.
The ships found in the waters of fourni, from different historic eras. Some fragments belong to the archaic period of Greek history (700-480 BCE) – Hellenistic (323-31 BCE). Among them are the court of late antiquity (roughly 300-600 gg BC) and even relatively modern ships of XVIII-XIX centuries.
Scientists explain such high concentration and variety of debris that the archipelago of fourni is located at the intersection of important trade routes. Through it floated the court, EN route from mainland Greece to Asia Minor or the Aegean sea to the Levant (Syria, Palestine, Lebanon).
Among the wreckage, scientists have found many amphorae, pottery and ancient anchors.
