The Nigerian authorities have accused major oil companies of the world in illicit export of oil to the United States for a total of $12.7 billion
According to the Associated Press, the Federal court of Lagos, have registered claims against such companies as Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell, Agip (a subsidiary of Italian ENI), Total and Brasoil (“daughter” of the Brazilian Petrobras).
Sources in the government told AP that the company data is not declared by more than 57 million barrels of oil exported from the country in the period from 2011 to 2014.
As noted, the facts of illegal export of oil from Nigeria to the United States were established on the results of the audit, the declared volume of oil export in Nigeria and comparison with the volumes which were discharged by tankers in the United States.
In some cases, the company declared lower volumes of exported crude oil from Nigeria and higher when unloading oil in the United States. In some cases, as stated by the sources to the AP, the company exported oil from Nigeria to the United States, do not declare the data export in Nigeria.
Until recently, Nigeria was the largest oil producer in Africa despite the numerous problems with the production and transportation due to safety concerns and increased activity of militants from various factions in the Niger Delta.
The US was the largest importer of Nigerian oil, until they began to actively develop its own shale oil.
The trial in the lawsuits will begin next week, the lawsuit against Chevron will begin on September 30.
