Australian scientists scientifically substantiated astronomical significance of ancient stone circles in Scotland.
A group of astrophysicists from the University of Adelaide (Australia) was able to solve the mystery of the ancient stone circles in Scotland.
The research published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.
Scientists have found that ancient large stones were intended for studying the stars. During the study of these objects was used for 2-D and 3-D technology, thanks to which it became known that the circles convey information about movement and position of the Sun and the moon 5 thousand years ago.
Researchers have turned their attention to the Great stone circles of Callanish (Isle of Lewis) and Stenness (Orkney Islands). The age of these megaliths 500 years more than the age of the famous Stonehenge.
As the lead author of the research paper Dr Gail Higginbottom, before experts knew that the stone structure in some way associated with astronomical phenomena. However, now this hypothesis failed to prove by statistical calculations.
