Russian and European scientists will try to send a lander from orbit to the Red planet.
The joint mission of the European space Agency and the Russian space Agency arrives on Mars next week.
ExoMars (ExoMars) is an astrobiology mission, designed to search for geological and biological activity on Mars. The orbit of the red planet, it will be released on October 19. Upon reaching the two components of the mission — a scientific Orbiter Trace Gas Orbiter and the lander “Schiaparelli” will go our separate ways. TGO will go into low orbit and start to scan the Martian atmosphere for signs of methane, water vapor and other residual gases. “Schiaparelli” in the meantime, try to safely reach the surface of Mars.

In the 60-ies and 70-ies of the Soviet Union sent several probes to the Red planet, they all crashed and died shortly after the fall or disappeared from radar. In 2003, the lander Beagle 2 ESA sat on the surface, but its solar panels did not deploy and the contact with the Ground was lost.
16 Oct “Schiaparelli” and TGO will split. The lander will enter the Martian atmosphere. If all goes according to plan, “Schiaparelli” will deploy the drogue chute and then activates the three sets of engines. However, he will gather information to characterize the structure of the Martian atmosphere and the expected landing site.
