New research suggests that a lack or overabundance of sleep is a risk factor for stroke and may prevent the rehabilitation period.

A review of published studies has shown that such sleep disorders as insomnia and sleep apnea associated with stroke risk and recovery issues. “Sleep disorders are more common in patients who have had a stroke, even more than in the General population,” says lead researcher Dr Dirk Hermann, Professor of neurology at University hospital Essen in Germany.

Previously, scientists have proven that sleep apnea is associated with breathing problems that are more common in elderly patients who have had a stroke. Some studies have shown that apnea was the participants before the stroke and may have contributed to the risk. In addition, patients with more severe apnea and strokes can be serious.

Other sleep disorders such as insomnia and hypersomnia are also risk factors for stroke. Because the study did not aim to discover a causal relationship is not yet clear whether treatment of sleep problems can reduce the risk of stroke.
