At the edge of the lake, scientists have found a lot of dead crabs and fish.
Scientists from the U.S. published the results of exploring the mysterious underwater lake off the coast of New Orleans.
In 2014, this is an underwater lake at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico discovered using controlled deep-sea robot.
A two-year study showed that the water in this lake contains five times more salt than the sea.
It is located at a depth of about 1000 meters, its diameter is 34 meters. The lake consists of two layers. The depth of the first – just over three meters. It was recorded a high concentration of salt. The water temperature there will be 7.8 degrees. The lower layer consists of sediments with a high content of hydrocarbon. The temperature of this mass is 19 degrees.
“We called this place the “whirlpool of death”, because it is warm, salty and kills everything that falls into it, says study author Erik Cordes from temple University. We found lots of dead crabs and fish at the edge of the salt basin.”
