A joint study by geologists from international universities has helped to clarify the date of the Great oxygen event, which marked a sharp increase in the mass fraction of oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere.
As the authors of the study, this event occurred about 2,33 billion years ago and lasted from one to ten million years. The work was published in the journal Science Advances by a group of geologists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
With an eye on modern data, it can be argued that even 2.45 billion years ago in earth’s atmosphere oxygen was practically absent. Produced by cyanobacteria, it is rapidly absorbed by microorganisms and other chemical elements. And then an event occurred, which is also called “Oxygen Revolution”. The appearance of a small amount of oxygen could give an impetus to the further development of life on earth.
