The company E Ink has created the world’s first color e-ink.
The company E Ink has developed a display that displays up to 32,000 colors. The developers promise that the picture will be so clear that you almost will not differ from the colors on the printed paper. The project is called “Advanced Color ePaper”, and that’s how it works this screen.
Color displays based on electronic ink have existed for a long time, but it really was the usual black-and-white screens that contained only two pigments — black and white. Color was achieved by using overhead color filters.
New screens E Ink ACeP is, according to developers, the first electrophoretic display (electronic ink), which is able to reflect all colors at each point without the use of the color filter array (CFA). The latest technology can show eight basic colors in terms of yields 32 thousand colors.
From the filters failed to give up, because in each pixel, which is a microcapsule injected pigments of four colors. It is white, Magenta, yellow, and blue — classic printing scheme for printing full-color images. The main difficulty of this screen is to make the capsule in the upper part surfaced particles need to currently color. Before capsules black-and-white screens with two pigments were used, a simple change of polarity. But it cannot be used for four colors.
E Ink’s engineers have solved this problem by the fact that the pigments of different colors react differently to the magnitude of the applied voltage. On low voltage only responds to one pigment, and duration of use low voltage large enough. Other pigment reacts to high voltage, and a pulse of such a control voltage is short enough not to affect the pigments of other colors.
The feature of E Ink ACeP makes it very slow to update the image is two seconds. In each microcapsule move four different pigments in liquids. This process is physically impossible to speed up, so speed redraw the E Ink ACeP has never come close to the speed of redrawing a black-and-white E Ink.
This leads to the conclusion that e-books on the E Ink screens ACeP never will be. But for static street advertising and information signage the update rate is not required, but they can consume a minimum of energy
