The new base, located between the Earth and the Moon, may be the successor to the current International space station.
The European space Agency (ESA) plans to build a space base between Earth and the Moon. It can be used as a transit point for missions to the moon or as a starting point for research in other parts of the Solar system.
While ESA has not formed a clear plan, but it is assumed that to build a new base, which will be located about halfway between the earth and the Moon within 10 years.
It can become a successor to the current International space station, the lifetime of which should be completed by 2024-th year. According to the ESA spokesperson David Parker, the new base will be located much further and open up opportunities for space exploration and, in particular, of the moon.
“This is our refuge in deep space, a new place to live and learn how to work in space, a kind of base camp to explore the Solar system and return to the surface of the moon,” says Parker. – Astronauts can see the moon, untouched by man for over 50 years. We want to go back because we barely scratched the surface”.
Plans to create a database will be discussed later this year at a conference in Lucerne, Switzerland. The event will be held with the participation of Ministers of the European countries.
One of the supporters of this project is the British astronaut Tim Peak, which was previously returned after a six-month mission to the ISS. According to him, “we are already at the stage where you can start missions outside the space station.
