In contrast to people for whom Valerian has a calming effect, representatives of the cat, sniffing or tasting the roots of this plant, come in a state of excitement, begin to roll on the ground, roll over or run randomly.
As reported facenews.ua, strong smell of Valerian attracts mostly cats, cats are completely indifferent to it. Why is it so and why people it means calming effect, and for the members of the cat family, like a drug?
Apparently, due to the fact that the essential oils of the plant resemble the smell of cat pheromones, causing the male sexual arousal.
And yet, the behavior of cats smell Valerian, is clearly reminiscent of the intoxication or a reaction to a recreational drug. The only difference is the shortness of the exposure. Already after 10-20 minutes the cat can calm down and behave as if nothing had happened. Sometimes, however, it happens that the period of excitement gives way to a long, deep sleep.
Usually this can occur if the animal received an impressive dose of a substance that is a narcotic for him.
An overdose or too frequent use of the tincture may cause death. Animals who receive regular Valerian, eventually begin to look like real drug addicts.
Is that a sick pet is persistently begging for dry roots or tincture of Valerian.
This is due to the ability of the drug to relieve stomach and intestinal spasms. A small amount of Valerian will be for cats medication and will not cause harm to health. But don’t overdo it!
