Sergio Canavero conducted a series of successful tests on animals.
Italian surgeon Sergio Canavero, who plans to undertake the world’s first transplant of a human head, said that carrying out such an operation possible at the beginning of next year.
Canavero has conducted three successful experiments on animals, which have been described in articles published in the journal Surgical Neurology International. The scientist was able to overcome one of the major obstacles to the transplantation of the head, reattach the spinal cord. Canavero together with his colleagues held a dog that was completely paralyzed after a neck injury, and two weeks later the animal was able to move its front paws. And in three weeks the dog is able to walk again. In addition, the researchers conducted experiments on mice and rats.
Critics argue that experiments on mice and rats are not enough for convincing conclusions, but Canavero determined to carry out the operation on humans early next year.
Earlier it was reported that in China there was a second applicant for a head transplant. They became the 62-year-old completely paralyzed van Guangming. Operation, presumably, will be held in Harbin.
