Norilsk is considered the most Northern of the large (population over 100 thousand) cities in the world. In the XVI century in that area there was the city Mangazeya, trade and handicraft center of the Arctic. However, by the seventeenth century it fell into decay and gradually disappeared.

The first building in the history of modern Norilsk, was built in 1921, during the expedition of the Arctic Explorer Nikolai Urvantsev.
