Scientists have found that women have more common gene that is associated with the occurrence of lung cancer.
Swiss scientists have confirmed his study of already known information that the female body is more vulnerable to chemicals that cause cancer, or carcinogens, such as tobacco, than the body of men.
The study used information on 683 patients with lung cancer treated at a Swiss clinic between 2000 and 2005. It turned out that women have often developed the most common form of the disease is adenocarcinoma and, as a rule, this disease was diagnosed in them in the early stages. Study leader Dr Martin Rue (Madison Martin) believes that his research proves greater sensitivity of female body to the carcinogens contained in tobacco.
The results of the study were presented at the European multidisciplinary conference on problems of adenocarcinomas in Lugano, Switzerland. In the early last century lung cancer was a rare disease among women, but from the 1960s years, it rapidly turns into an epidemic. Now it is the main cause of death of American women with cancer. “Lung cancer is not only a male disease but women are more concerned with other types of cancer, such as breast cancer,” said Dr. Felip.
In studies conducted previously, it has been proven that the risk of lung cancer is higher among women than men. American scientists have found that women have more common gene that is associated with the occurrence of lung cancer. However, Henry Scowcroft of the British Centre for cancer research urges not to do hasty conclusions. “People should not rush to draw conclusions about the fact that women and men have different susceptibility to cancer. These scientists reviewed the cases at one cancer center, but did not examine the biological differences between lung cancer in women and men,” he said.
