“We were not taught to survive after a nuclear war”

"Нас не учили выживать после ядерной войны"

I went to the newest school in the city, so the shelter was right in it. Once a year we arranged the alarm and we organized down to the yard, and then to the shelter. First came Junior, then senior.

The shelter did not inspire. Inside was dark. We were sitting on the benches. School of a thousand students together with teachers were placed there completely.

We sat there for some time, waiting for the all-clear signal.

From childhood we were taught not to die from a nuclear explosion. We knew that the feet need to fall to the explosion, and a head from him. And if you’re lucky with the cover, the on the contrary head to the shelter. Knew better not to hide behind walls of tall buildings. I knew that I need to seal up the Windows and stay at home, because it will be radioactive dust.

But somehow we are not taught to survive after a nuclear war. Taught hunting and fishing, were not taught to build fires using available tools and make shelters in the woods.

And even when they were recruits, and when it seems to have started to teach something more solid, like throwing grenades out of the trench and rifle shooting — never taught survival. Always meant that we need to just come to a collection point and there all the commanders will tell you what to do.

Nobody was taught to survive in a situation, if the commanders will also become radioactive ash.
