Ilya Marchenko for the first time in his career he made it to the third round in the tournament series Grand slam.
In the second round of the Open championship of the USA the Ukrainian waited for the strongest tennis player of Bosnian Damir Cumhur occupying the ATP ranking of 72. Marchenko was not considered a favorite, but unexpectedly defeated the opponent in three games.
The beginning of the match was stunning for Dzumhur – Bosnian lost five games in a row and could not count on a comeback. After a spirited start Marchenko was not going to slow down Ilya led 3:0, then gave up three consecutive games, but with the score 5:4 caught on the opponent’s serve and made the most important break.
Key in the third set was the eighth game – Marchenko made the break and opened the path to getting into the 1/16 final at the US Open. Now Ukrainians will face a serious test in the face 14th-seeded nick Kyrgios – in case of victory Marchenko for the first time to enter the top 50 of the ATP ranking and is guaranteed to become the first racket of Ukraine.
